Surf Conditions

  • How crowded does it get?

Arugam Bay can get crowded, especially during peak season (July-September), so expect to share waves with many other surfers. For less crowded conditions, consider visiting during shoulder months (April, May, June, October). This is one of the main reasons, we only run our camps and courses in April, May, June and part of July, so that you get the best conditions, without the crowd.

  • What surf skill level is required?

Arugam Bay is best suited for all levels. Main Point requires moderate to advanced skills due to its power and crowded conditions. However, there are also mellower spots like Pottuvil Point that cater to intermediate surfers and longboarders, Peanut farm & Elephant rock for beginner to advanced, and Baby point for beginners to intermediate. There are multiple other spots that are suitable for all levels, depending on the conditions each day.

  • What are the wave conditions like?

Arugam Bay is famous for its long right-hand point breaks that can offer rides of 200-500 meters. The waves typically range from 2-6 feet (0.6-1.8 meters) and work best with southeast swells. The main break, called Main Point, offers the most powerful waves in the area with 4-10 feet waves on good days.

  • When is the best time to surf in Arugam Bay?

The prime surf season runs from April to October. During these months, the southwest monsoon brings strong, consistent swells to the east coast, creating optimal surfing conditions.
