How to Become a Surf Instructor: Start Your Journey with Breakers Surf Academy

There’s something about surfing that gets under your skin—in the best way. The ocean, the freedom, the feeling of gliding down a wave… it’s no surprise so many surfers eventually find themselves wondering: Could I make this my job?

The answer is yes. And becoming a surf instructor is one of the best ways to do it.

At Breakers Surf Academy in Arugam Bay, Sri Lanka, we’ve helped surfers from all over the world turn their passion into a profession. If you’re thinking about making the leap, here’s a clear, no-fluff guide to what it actually takes.

1. Start Surfing & Keep Surfing

You don’t have to be a pro, but to teach surfing, you should be confident in the water. That means being able to catch green waves, generate your own speed, and manage yourself safely in different conditions.

If you’re not quite there yet, that’s totally fine. At Breakers, we offer surf development programs that focus on technique, ocean awareness, and personal coaching to get you ready.

2. Get a Recognized Instructor Qualification

To work as a surf instructor, you’ll need an official certification. The most widely recognized one worldwide is the ISA Level 1 Surf Instructor qualification, which covers:

  • Surf theory and technique

  • Lesson structure and safety

  • How to teach beginners and intermediate surfers

  • Risk assessment and group management

At Breakers Surf Academy, we run ISA-accredited surf instructor courses each season, taught by experienced ISA Trainers right here in Arugam Bay.

3. Complete First Aid and Water Safety Training

Being an instructor means being responsible—not just for stoke levels, but also for safety. To get certified, you’ll also need:

  • Basic First Aid Certification

  • Water Safety Qualification

We include this training in all our instructor packages, so you don’t need to organize it separately.

4. Join a Course That Offers Real Teaching Experience

Reading from a manual isn’t enough. To feel confident teaching, you need real-world practice.

That’s why our courses go beyond the basics. With Breakers, you’ll:

  • Coach real students under supervision

  • Work alongside our experienced instructors

  • Learn how to adapt your teaching style to different surfers

  • Build your confidence in both the water and on land

By the time you finish, you’ll feel ready to step into your first job.

5. Start Your Surf Career

Once you’re qualified, your options open up. Whether you want to work seasonally in places like Portugal, Bali, or Costa Rica—or build a full-time career—your certification is your ticket in.

Many of our graduates go on to coach around the world. Others stay in Sri Lanka and join the Breakers team for the season. Wherever you want to take it, we’re here to help you get there.
